Tempi narrativi. Il past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) indica un'azione durata fino a un momento passato, spesso con for o since: They had been queuing for an hour when the doors opened.

Passivo avanzato. Con i verbi di opinione (say, believe, think, know, expect) hai due costruzioni: It is believed that the town was founded by the Etruscans oppure The town is believed to have been founded by the Etruscans. Per un servizio fatto da altri si usa have (o get) + oggetto + participio: I had my bike fixed.

Discorso indiretto. Dopo said, told, asked i tempi di solito arretrano di un passo (is → was, has done → had done). Tell vuole la persona (told me), say no. Le domande indirette hanno l'ordine della frase affermativa: She asked where the station was.

Frasi relative. The book that you lent me was great. Le non-defining aggiungono un'informazione tra virgole e non ammettono that: Genoa, which I love, is my home town.

Connettivi. Although ed even though vogliono una frase; despite e in spite of un nome o un verbo in -ing; however collega due frasi separate; whereas mette a confronto due fatti.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato I was waiting since an hour when the bus arrived.

Giusto I had been waiting for an hour when the bus arrived.

E la durata vuole for, non since.

  2. Sbagliato If I would have known, I would have called you.

Giusto If I had known, I would have called you.

Nella frase con if non si usa would: il terzo tipo vuole if + past perfect. Would have va solo nella frase principale.

  3. Sbagliato I made repair my car.

Giusto I had my car repaired.

«Ho fatto riparare la macchina»: in inglese si usa have + oggetto + participio passato (have something done), oppure get nel parlato. Make qui non funziona.

  4. Sbagliato She said me that she was busy.

Giusto She told me that she was busy. / She said that she was busy.

Tell vuole la persona subito dopo (told me). Say no: se vuoi indicare la persona, devi usare to (said to me).

  5. Sbagliato My brother, that lives in Bristol, is an engineer.

Giusto My brother, who lives in Bristol, is an engineer.

Nelle relative tra virgole (non-defining) non si usa mai that: per le persone serve who, per le cose which.

  6. Sbagliato Despite it was late, we went out.

Giusto Although it was late, we went out. / Despite the late hour, we went out.
