Present perfect o past simple? Con un momento concluso (yesterday, last summer, in 2019, two years ago) si usa il past simple. Con ever, never, already, yet, so far e con for e since, quando la situazione arriva fino a oggi, si usa il present perfect.

Periodo ipotetico. Dopo if non vanno né will né would: If it's sunny, we'll go out; If I knew her number, I'd call her. Unless vuol dire if … not.

Modali. Should per i consigli, have to per gli obblighi, might per le possibilità. Attenzione: mustn't è un divieto, don't have to vuol dire che non è necessario.

Gerundio o infinito? Dopo enjoy, finish, mind, avoid, suggest e dopo le preposizioni (good at, interested in, look forward to) si usa la forma in -ing; dopo want, decide, hope, plan, promise, agree si usa to + verbo base.

Pronomi relativi.

  1. Sbagliato I have seen Paolo yesterday.

    Giusto I saw Paolo yesterday.

  2. Sbagliato If it will rain, we will cancel the barbecue.

Giusto If it rains, we'll cancel the barbecue.

In italiano si può dire «se pioverà»; in inglese dopo if (e dopo when o as soon as) il futuro si esprime con il present simple.

  3. Sbagliato You mustn't come if you don't want.

Giusto You don't have to come if you don't want to.

«Non devi» ha due significati: divieto (mustn't) e assenza di obbligo (don't have to). Se venire non è obbligatorio, serve don't have to.

  4. Sbagliato I suggest to take the train.

Giusto I suggest taking the train.

«Suggerisco di prendere» porta a usare to, ma dopo suggest serve la forma in -ing (oppure I suggest that we take the train).

  5. Sbagliato The dome was designed from Brunelleschi.

Giusto The dome was designed by Brunelleschi.

Nel passivo il «da» che introduce chi compie l'azione si traduce con by, non con from.

  6. Sbagliato When I was a child, I was used to play outside.

Giusto When I was a child, I used to play outside.

«Ero solito» si traduce used to + verbo base, senza be. Be used to + -ing significa «essere abituato a»: I'm used to getting up early.
