I'm tired” → She said she was tired.

He said he lives in Turin (ci vive ancora). Could, would, should e might restano uguali.

Say o tell?

  • say + (that) + frase: She said (that) she was late;
  • tell + persona + (that) + frase: She told me (that) she was late.

Non si dice She said me né She told that…, e that si può sempre omettere.

Domande. Nelle domande riferite l'ordine delle parole è quello della frase affermativa e do, does, did spariscono: “Where do you work?” → He asked me where I worked. Per le domande sì/no si usa if o whether: She asked if I was ready. Alla fine niente punto interrogativo.

Ordini e richieste. Tell o ask + persona + to + verbo base; al negativo not to: “Wait here” → He told us to wait there; “Please don't shout” → She asked me not to shout.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato He said me that he was tired.

Giusto He told me that he was tired. / He said that he was tired.

«Mi ha detto» fa venire voglia di scrivere said me, ma say non vuole la persona subito dopo: si usa tell + persona, oppure say senza persona.

  2. Sbagliato She said she would have come.

Giusto She said she would come.

Would have come indica un'ipotesi non realizzata.

  3. Sbagliato He asked me where did I live.

Giusto He asked me where I lived.

  4. Sbagliato She told me don't worry.

Giusto She told me not to worry.

«Mi ha detto di non preoccuparmi»: l'ordine si riferisce con tell + persona + not to + verbo base, proprio come «di non» + infinito in italiano.

  5. Sbagliato He told that he was leaving.

Giusto He said that he was leaving. / He told us that he was leaving.

  6. Sbagliato Last month she told me she would call me tomorrow.

Giusto Last month she told me she would call me the next day.

Quel «domani» è passato da un pezzo: tomorrow diventa the next day o the following day, e allo stesso modo yesterday diventa the day before.

Puoi scrivere She said that she was tired oppure She said she was tired; the next day oppure the following day; if oppure whether.
