  • by the time e when: By the time the guests arrived, we had cooked everything;
  • already, just, never… before: I had never driven on the left before that holiday;
  • because, per spiegare la causa di un fatto passato: He was late because he had missed the bus;
  • It was the first time…: It was the first time she had travelled alone.

Il past perfect continuous (had been + -ing) mette l'accento sulla durata di un'attività ancora in corso in un momento del passato, spesso con for e since: They had been talking for an hour when the lights went out («parlavano da un'ora»).

I got up, made a coffee and checked my emails. Con before e after l'ordine è già chiaro, quindi vanno bene tutte e due le forme: After she left / After she had left. Con when, invece, cambia il senso: When I arrived, Anna left (è uscita dopo) / When I arrived, Anna had left (era già uscita).

If I had known, I would have called you.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato When I arrived, she was already left.

    Giusto When I arrived, she had already left.

  2. Sbagliato We were waiting since an hour when the bus came.

    Giusto We had been waiting for an hour when the bus came.

  3. Sbagliato I knew him since years when he moved to Canada.

    Giusto I had known him for years when he moved to Canada.

E «da anni» è for years, mai since years.

  4. Sbagliato I had told you!

    Giusto I told you! / I told you so!

  5. Sbagliato It was the first time I was seeing the sea.

    Giusto It was the first time I had seen the sea.

    «Era la prima volta che vedevo il mare» in italiano vuole l'imperfetto, ma in inglese dopo It was the first time si usa il past perfect.

Past perfect e past simple: come allenarti
