Azione lunga interrotta da un'azione breveI was crossing the square when I heard my name.
La stessa idea, con «mentre»While I was crossing the square, I heard my name.
Due azioni in corso insiemeBen was washing up while Kate was drying.
Azioni concluse, una dopo l'altraWhen the music stopped, everyone sat down.

Pensa a un racconto come a un film. Il past continuous è lo sfondo, ciò che stava già succedendo: It was getting dark and the shops were closing. Il past simple è la trama, cioè i fatti conclusi che fanno andare avanti la storia: A man came in, ordered a coffee and sat down by the window.

Di solito when introduce l'azione breve e while quella lunga.
  • Sequenza: se le azioni avvengono una dopo l'altra, vanno tutte al past simple: When the alarm went off, I got up.

When I arrived, they were having lunch = avevano già cominciato a mangiare. When I arrived, they had lunch = hanno pranzato dopo il mio arrivo.

  1. Sbagliato I studied when Marco arrived.

Giusto I was studying when Marco arrived.

  2. Sbagliato When I was a child, I was having a dog.

Giusto When I was a child, I had a dog.

L'imperfetto italiano non diventa automaticamente past continuous.

  3. Sbagliato While I was waiting, I have met an old friend.

Giusto While I was waiting, I met an old friend.

  4. Sbagliato While the bus arrived, I was reading.

Giusto When the bus arrived, I was reading.

While («mentre») introduce l'azione lunga; per l'azione breve che interrompe si usa when.

  5. Sbagliato Last night I was watching a film and then I was going to bed.

Giusto Last night I watched a film and then I went to bed.

  6. Sbagliato What did you do when I called? (per chiedere «che cosa stavi facendo?»)

Giusto What were you doing when I called?

What did you do when I called? chiede come hai reagito alla telefonata; per un'azione che era già in corso serve il past continuous.

Come scegliere il tempo giusto

Davanti a ogni frase fatti due domande. Primo: l'azione era già cominciata e non ancora finita in quel momento? Se sì, past continuous. Secondo: è un fatto concluso, magari uno di una serie (first… then…, as soon as)? Allora past simple.
