past simplepresent perfect
Quandoyesterday, last night, two days ago, in 2019ever, never, so far, up to now, recently
Periodolast week, last year, when I was a childthis week, this year, since January
DurataI lived in Cork for two years (now I don't)I've lived in Turin for two years (and I still do)
Domande tipicheWhen did you…? What time did you…?Have you ever…? How long have you…?

Il past simple racconta un fatto concluso in un momento preciso del passato, detto o sottinteso: I saw Marco yesterday, We moved to Turin in 2019. Le domande con When e What time vogliono sempre il past simple: When did you arrive?

  • esperienze fino a oggi: Have you ever been to Lisbon?;
  • un risultato che conta adesso: I've lost my wallet, so I can't pay;
  • un periodo non ancora finito: So far we've sold forty tickets;
  • situazioni che continuano: She's worked here since May.

«Ieri ho visto Marco» → I saw Marco yesterday, non I have seen.

Spesso un dialogo comincia con il present perfect e, quando arrivano i dettagli, continua con il past simple: Have you ever been to Dublin? – Yes, I went there last spring. – Did you like it?

Did you eat yet?); qui seguiamo l'uso britannico.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato Yesterday I have been to the cinema.

    Giusto Yesterday I went to the cinema.

  2. Sbagliato When have you arrived?

    Giusto When did you arrive?

  3. Sbagliato I have studied in Granada for a year, then I came back to Italy.

    Giusto I studied in Granada for a year, then I came back to Italy.

  4. Sbagliato I didn't eat anything since breakfast.

    Giusto I haven't eaten anything since breakfast.

  5. Sbagliato It's the first time I come to London.

    Giusto It's the first time I've been to London.

    «È la prima volta che vengo a Londra» usa il presente; in inglese, dopo It's the first time, serve il present perfect.

  6. Sbagliato I've seen this film when I was a child.

    Giusto I saw this film when I was a child.

    When I was a child indica un periodo della vita ormai finito: past simple.

Ever, never, so far, since e this week (se la settimana non è finita) lo lasciano aperto: present perfect.
