Comparativo di maggioranza. Aggettivo corto + -er, aggettivo lungo con more, poi than («di», «che»): My street is quieter than yours, The new stadium is more modern than the old one. Nei confronti «di» e «che» si traducono sempre con than, mai con that.

Superlativo. The + -est oppure the most. Dopo il superlativo si usa in con luoghi e gruppi (the tallest building in Milan, the youngest player in the team) e of con periodi e numeri (the best day of the holiday, the cheapest of the three). Spesso è seguito da I've ever…: the best book I've ever read.

Uguaglianza. As + aggettivo + as («come», «quanto»): Davide is as tall as his dad. Al negativo not as … as (oppure not so … as, più formale): The sequel isn't as good as the first film.

Minoranza. Less + aggettivo + than e, al superlativo, the least. Nel parlato si preferisce spesso not as … as.

Altre regole utili:

  • per dire «molto più» si usa much, far o a lot davanti al comparativo, mai very: much cheaper;
  • dopo than e as nel parlato si usa il pronome complemento (older than me), in un registro più formale older than I am;
  • alcuni aggettivi di due sillabe ammettono le due forme: quieter o more quiet, cleverer o more clever, narrower o more narrow;
  • further vuol dire anche «ulteriore»: further information.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato This hotel is more cheaper than the other one.

    Giusto This hotel is cheaper than the other one.

  2. Sbagliato Milan is bigger that Turin.

    Giusto Milan is bigger than Turin.

  3. Sbagliato She is the more intelligent student in the class.

    Giusto She is the most intelligent student in the class.

In inglese il superlativo vuole the most (o -est); the more si usa solo confrontando due elementi.

  4. Sbagliato It's the oldest university of Europe.

    Giusto It's the oldest university in Europe.

Of si usa con periodi e numeri: the best day of the year, the tallest of the three.

  5. Sbagliato Tickets are very more expensive this year.

    Giusto Tickets are much more expensive this year.

    «Molto più» non si traduce con very: davanti a un comparativo servono much, far o a lot. Very va solo con l'aggettivo semplice: very expensive.

  6. Sbagliato Anna is tall as her sister.

    Giusto Anna is as tall as her sister.
