Il verbo be (essere) si usa per dire chi è o com'è qualcuno, da dove viene e dove si trova: I'm from Turin, The keys are on the table. Nella negativa si aggiunge not (She isn't at home); nella domanda am, is o are va prima del soggetto (Is Marco at home?), senza do. Nelle risposte brevi affermative non si contrae: Yes, I am, mai Yes, I'm.

Molte espressioni che in italiano usano «avere» in inglese vogliono be:

  • l'età: I'm twenty o I'm twenty years old (mai I have twenty years);
  • fame, sete, freddo, caldo, sonno: I'm hungry, thirsty, cold, hot, sleepy;
  • paura, ragione, torto, fretta: I'm afraid of spiders, You're right, He's wrong, We're in a hurry.

Anche «fa freddo» si dice con be: It's cold today.

Have got (avere) indica possesso, parentela e caratteristiche fisiche: She's got two brothers, He's got blue eyes. È molto usato nell'inglese britannico; have con do/does ha lo stesso significato ed è corretto ovunque: Have you got a car? = Do you have a car? Le due forme non si mescolano: mai Do you have got…? Attenzione alla contrazione: in she's got la 's sta per has, in she's tired sta per is.

Per le azioni (have breakfast, have a shower, have fun) si usa solo have, senza got.

C'è / ci sono non si traduce con it is né con have, ma con there is / there are: lo trovi negli esercizi su there is e there are.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato I have twenty years.

    Giusto I'm twenty. / I'm twenty years old.

    In inglese l'età si dice con be, non con have. Si può dire solo il numero (I'm twenty) oppure aggiungere years old, mai solo years.

  2. Sbagliato I have hungry. / I have cold.

    Giusto I'm hungry. / I'm cold.

    Fame, sete, freddo, caldo, sonno e paura in inglese sono aggettivi (hungry, thirsty, cold, hot, sleepy, afraid) e vogliono il verbo be.

  3. Sbagliato It is a bar near the station. (per dire «c'è un bar»)

    Giusto There's a bar near the station.

    «C'è» si traduce con there is. It is descrive o identifica qualcosa di cui si è già parlato: It's a nice bar.

  4. Sbagliato Do you have got a car?

    Giusto Have you got a car? / Do you have a car?

    Le due forme sono corrette, ma non si mescolano: con got la domanda si fa con have; con do il verbo è solo have, senza got.

  5. Sbagliato Are you Italian? – Yes, I'm.

    Giusto Are you Italian? – Yes, I am.

    Nelle risposte brevi affermative il verbo non si contrae: Yes, I am, Yes, she is, Yes, they have. Nelle negative invece sì: No, I'm not.

  6. Sbagliato She have got a brother.

    Giusto She has got a brother.

    Con he, she, it si usa has got, contratto in 's got. Attenzione a non confonderlo con she's = she is: se dopo c'è got, la 's è has.

Essere e avere: come allenarti

Fai gli esercizi in ordine. I primi due sono esercizi to be di base: am, is, are, frasi negative, domande e risposte brevi.

Se c'è, serve be.
