There is (contratto there's) vuol dire «c'è» e si usa con un nome singolare o non numerabile: There's a cinema in Via Roma, There's some milk in the fridge. There are vuol dire «ci sono» e si usa con un nome plurale: There are three bedrooms in the flat.

  • Some e any: nelle frasi affermative con i plurali e i non numerabili si usa some; nelle negative e nelle domande any: There aren't any eggs, Is there any bread? Nella negativa puoi usare anche no con il verbo affermativo: There are no eggs.
  • A e an: con un nome singolare numerabile serve l'articolo. Si usa an davanti a un suono vocalico (an old castle, an hour) e a davanti a un suono consonantico (a university).
  • How many e how much: How many + plurale + are there? (How many students are there?); How much + non numerabile + is there? (How much time is there?).
  • Risposte brevi: Yes, there is / No, there isn't. Nella risposta affermativa non si contrae.

Differenza con it is: there is dice che una cosa c'è, it is la descrive o la identifica: There's a new café in my street. It's very small.

Differenza con have: «A Roma ci sono molti musei» si traduce There are a lot of museums in Rome oppure Rome has (got) a lot of museums, mai In Rome have….

Al passato si usano there was (c'era) e there were (c'erano), con le stesse regole: There were a lot of people at the party.

Errori tipici degli italiani

  1. Sbagliato In Rome have a lot of museums.

    Giusto There are a lot of museums in Rome. / Rome has got a lot of museums.

    «A Roma ci sono molti musei» non si traduce con have senza soggetto: si usa there are, oppure have con un soggetto vero (Rome has…).

  2. Sbagliato It is a bank near my house. (per dire «c'è una banca»)

    Giusto There's a bank near my house.

    It is descrive o identifica qualcosa di cui si è già parlato. Per dire che una cosa esiste o si trova in un posto serve there is.

  3. Sbagliato There is two bedrooms.

    Giusto There are two bedrooms.

    Il verbo concorda con il nome che segue: singolare there is, plurale there are. Attenzione a people, che è sempre plurale.

  4. Sbagliato Is there a lift? – Yes, there's.

    Giusto Is there a lift? – Yes, there is.

    Nelle risposte brevi affermative non si usa la forma contratta. Nelle negative invece sì: No, there isn't.

  5. Sbagliato How many people there are?

    Giusto How many people are there?

    Nelle domande is o are va prima di there, anche dopo How many.

  6. Sbagliato There aren't some biscuits.

    Giusto There aren't any biscuits. / There are no biscuits.

    Nelle negative si usa any. Con no il verbo resta affermativo: mai There aren't no biscuits.

Come allenarti con there is e there are

Gli esercizi vanno dal più facile al più difficile: prima la scelta tra singolare e plurale, poi negative, domande e risposte brevi, quindi some, any, a/an e How many…?. L'ultimo, di livello B1, aggiunge il passato (there was, there were) e la differenza con it is: se lo trovi difficile, rifai prima il terzo.

Un buon modo per fissare la struttura è descrivere a voce posti che conosci bene: la tua camera, la tua via, il centro della tua città (There's a bakery on the corner. There are two bus stops…). Quando hai un dubbio tra there is e it is, chiediti se stai dicendo che una cosa c'è o se la stai descrivendo.
