| Risultato o attività | I've cleaned the car. It looks new! | I've been cleaning the car. I'm soaking wet! |
| Quanti o da quanto | She's sent forty invitations. | She's been sending invitations since nine. |
| Finito o in corso | I've read your book. Here it is. | I've been reading your book. I'm on page 90. |
| Verbi di stato | I've known him for years. | — |
| Domanda tipica | How many…? How much…? | How long…? |
Il present perfect continuous (have/has been + verbo in -ing) mette al centro l'attività e la sua durata, fino a ora o fino a pochissimo tempo fa:
- con How long, for e since, per un'azione che continua: We've been queuing for forty minutes;
- per un'attività appena finita che ha lasciato tracce visibili: Your hands are black – have you been fixing the bike?;
- per azioni ripetute in un periodo recente: I've been getting up early lately.
- quando dici quante cose o quanto hai fatto (how many, how much): I've answered thirty emails;
- quando l'azione è conclusa e conta che sia finita: I've fixed the bike – you can take it now;
- con i verbi di stato (know, have nel senso di possedere, like, believe, understand, belong), che di norma non vanno in -ing: I've known Elena since 2015;
- con le azioni istantanee, che non durano: I've lost my glasses, non I've been losing.
Quando vanno bene tutti e due. Con verbi come live, work, study e teach insieme a for o since, la differenza è minima: I've lived here for ten years e I've been living here for ten years sono corrette entrambe.

-
Sbagliato I'm waiting for the bus since twenty minutes.
Giusto I've been waiting for the bus for twenty minutes.
-
Sbagliato I've been knowing Laura for years.
Giusto I've known Laura for years.
-
Sbagliato I've been writing four emails this morning.
Giusto I've written four emails this morning.
-
Sbagliato I've read the novel you lent me, but I'm only halfway through.
Giusto I've been reading the novel you lent me, but I'm only halfway through.
-
Sbagliato Oh no, I've been losing my phone!
Giusto Oh no, I've lost my phone!
